Most hospitals in the United States are striving to reach The Healthy People 2010 goals of 75% initiation breastfeeding rate and 50% by 6 months. How can our mothers get to this goal if they don’t start off well? The way we can improve our breastfeeding rates is by implementing the “Ten Steps of Baby Friendly.” In addition, for those hospitals that cannot afford or are not able to meet all of the requirements for Baby Friendly (such as purchasing formula, extensive staff education and on-site certification visits) the 10 Steps of the Model Hospital Policies may be the optimal choice. This 60-minute webinar provides you with these important tools!

These Easy and Effective 10 Steps for Successful Breastfeeding closely examine the scientific evidence that leads to improved breastfeeding rates. Past changes and practices have not necessarily been a reflection of evidence-based practice. Hospital practice has not been a driving concern for ensuring successful attachment, parental bonding, and breastfeeding success. This session provides you with many tangible and helpful tools gleaned from Baby Friendly Hospitals Best Practices.

Inpatient and outpatient healthcare professionals and lactation consultants will learn how to make their jobs much easier and become more effective at achieving successful parental bonding, breastfeeding initiation, and duration rates.

The 12-Lead ECG is an inexpensive, noninvasive assessment tool that provides valuable information about the patient. Accurate analysis of the ECG by a knowledgeable clinician can impact quality outcomes. The key to 12-lead ECG interpretation resides in understanding normal patterns. Fundamental skills are foundational to the confidence of the nurse in applying ECG information to clinical situations. These skills include: 1) understanding normal depolarization of the heart, 2) identifying the positive electrode for each lead, 3) recognizing normal ST segment and T waves on the ECG, 4) correctly identifying QRS patterns and 5) correlating each lead of the ECG with a wall of the myocardium. This 60-minute webinar will also apply knowledge of the 12 lead ECG to bedside cardiac monitoring. This class is designed for nurses not yet proficient with fundamental ECG skills and will serve as the basis for developing future ECG skills. Participants will complete this webinar with knowledge that can be applied to bedside clinical practice immediately

“What to do … what not to do.” We have the knowledge and understanding; it’s time to put it into practice!  The way to balance our patients’ cultural healthcare beliefs and develop a plan of care that is well suited and acceptable for all is through preservation, accommodation and repatterning.  Healthcare professionals need to acknowledge their cultural health beliefs/values along with those of their patients, and understand the differences. We can then find common ground in which to develop a plan of care that ensures a trusting, respectful and collaborative relationship.

When is comes to developing a self-management plan that integrates the expertise of a healthcare professional with the concerns, priorities and resources of the patient ... patients and clinicians must come together and work as one. When collaboration occurs, the results speak for themselves!

Collaborative patient care requires a new counseling paradigm:  patient empowerment.  The new "empowerment" paradigm involves a fundamental redefinition of the roles and relationships of health care professionals and patients.  It requires a shift from the compliance model to the empowerment model, which is based on the principle that 99% of the care provided to patients with self-managed illnesses is provided BY the patient.  This 90-minute presentation will define the core principles of patient empowerment and the seven key tools proven to empower patient behavior change.

One of the most common problems that arises in patients with cancer is that of mucositis. An estimated 15%-40% patients receiving standard chemotherapy or radiation therapy will experience mucositis as well as 70%-90% of patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation and 80% patients receiving radiation for head and neck cancer. Mucositis develops over a period of time, with the patient experiencing a range of symptoms from mild discomfort to an inability to swallow. Oral mucositis leads to several problems, including pain, nutritional problems as a result of inability to eat, and increased risk of infection due to open sores in the mucosa. Mucositis often becomes so severe that it interferes with a patient’s nutritional intake, causing the need for enteral or parenteral feedings. It has a significant effect on the patient’s quality of life and can be dose-limiting, requiring a reduction in subsequent chemotherapy doses.

There are several commonly-used interventions for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis. However, many of them are unfounded in the literature. Several studies have been completed regarding oral mucositis, which have served as a basis for recommendations on the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis. One common thread for most oral mucositis is pain. Adequate pain control is paramount in providing care for the patient with mucositis.

Common interventions will be discussed in light of the research surrounding these interventions. After completing this program, you will be able to intervene appropriately for the patient with mucositis to provide the most effective and evidence-based care. Providing this care will ultimately improve patient outcomes, including quality of life.

Child maltreatment evokes images of horrific burns, bruises, fractures and autopsy findings. Five children die every day from physical abuse; the youngest are the most vulnerable and the abuser is overwhelmingly known to the victim in an overwhelmingly high percent of cases. Many images and consequences, however, are less obvious and include the faces of neglect, emotional scars from exposure to trauma and the life-long impact of witnessing violence. In the United States, more than 3.3 million children between the ages of 3 and 17 years are exposed to crime and violence in their neighborhoods and inside their homes (Lynch, 2006). They are innocent, unwilling victims and silent witnesses to the sights and sounds of domestic violence, sibling abuse, gang activities and school violence.

Healthcare practitioners are in a unique position to make a difference in the lives of children through prevention, community and family education, early identification and universal screening. Multi-disciplinary collaboration and intervention through comprehensive utilization of resources are foundational to the health of our children and the safety of our society.

Eosinophilic Esophagitis is an inflammatory condition of the esophagus that is characterized by having an abnormal number of eosinophils in the esophagus. It very closely mimics symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, but typically doesn’t respond to the normal therapy. It affects all ages, races, and genders.

It is now one of the most common causes of dysphagia and food impactions in adults. In childhood, vague symptoms associated with GERD and feeding difficulties are the first manifestations. Research indicates that the prevalence and diagnosis of EoE is increasing. There is no single accepted therapy, yet there is definitely a role that food allergies play in reintroduction of foods.

Being able to differentiate between EoE and GERD definitely can help reduce the severity and sequela that your patients experience. By attending this 60-minute teleseminar, you will be able to come to a more precise, accurate conclusion about what your patient is going through and find out what management options are currently available based on evidence-based practice.

As a healthcare provider, you encounter critical client care issues on a daily basis. You focus on providing care for these clients based on an understanding of the best known evidence combined with your considerable clinical expertise; a process also known as Evidence-Based Practice. Development of Evidence-Based Practice [EBP] requires that the professional nurse reviews resources, such as recent and past research, clinical guidelines and other related professional information sources. This must be done with a critical eye, weighing the available evidence in order to identify best practices.

The purpose of this teleseminar is to provide you with the tools needed to evaluate critical evidence and then bring that knowledge to the bedside. During this 60-minutes program, the focus will be on making sense of those research articles, so that you can assess the value of the reported findings and identify the best practices.

The next question is: Now that I know the best practices, how do I change what is happening at the bedside? That can be as simple as making personal decisions about providing care, or as complex as working to effect change within your unit or even your overall organization. Register today and learn about several basic strategies for bringing about change!

Grief - something that everyone will encounter at some point in life. Even though loss is a part of life, grief is still hidden in the shadows, often confused by ongoing myths and stereotypes about what is "normal."  Healthcare providers encounter clients on a regular basis who, in addition to health challenges, are simultaneously attempting to successfully navigate the often lonely journey of grief. Many providers continue to be confronted with their own discomfort regarding loss, and therefore may not openly discuss losses with the client.

An expanded awareness of loss, grief, mourning and bereavement can provide an opportunity for enhanced sensitivity and a more comprehensive assessment with a grieving client. Grief, although typically a difficult experience for all, can be "healthy" and should be promoted as part of the overall plan of care. Attend this one-hour presentation and explore the psychosocial concepts of loss, including the difference between adaptive coping and complicated grief and bereavement. Examine how healthcare providers can promote healthy grieving and avoid overlooked opportunities to help the grieving client.

One does not need to live in a major metropolitan area to be affected by a national disaster, as all communities have a similar potential for such events to happen. The 9/11 attacks in New York City and Hurricane Katrina both illustrated the dramatic impact that disasters can have on a community.

Disasters also have a profound effect on the entire healthcare community. When a disaster strikes, treatment centers are swamped with more patients and acuity than they or their staff can handle. Almost everything needed for treatment is impacted … transportation is chaotic and slow, medical supplies are limited and difficult to rebuild, and the equipment needed is being used to treat other patients. The surge in activity brought on by a disaster can leave care providers feeling overwhelmed as everything hits at once.

This 60-minute teleseminar will look at the array of disasters that can strike, and at the impact they can have. You will learn how to prepare for a disaster using a personal disaster plan and response kit. When a disaster hits, your first actions are crucial; start your preparations today by signing up for this valuable teleseminar.

The risk of death related to infection is paramount when the body’s ability to fight infection is impaired. Approximately 70-75% of the deaths from acute leukemia and 50% of the deaths in patients with solid tumors are related to infection secondary to neutropenia (Larson & Nirenberg, 2004). At least half of the neutropenic patients who become febrile have an established or occult infection, and at least one-fifth of the patients with neutrophil counts greater than 100/mm3 have bacteremia (Hughes et al., 2002).

Sepsis and septic shock are potentially life-threatening oncologic emergencies. Septic shock is a complex condition occurring when overwhelming infection leads to low blood pressure, low blood flow, altered coagulation & impaired clot breakdown. Septic shock is the most common cause of noncoronary intensive care deaths in the United States with incidence increasing over the past twenty years. Sepsis occurred in nearly 2% of all acute-care hospitalizations in the United States and resulted in close to 350,000 deaths annually. Patients with cancer are 5 times more likely to develop sepsis and 3 times more likely to be hospitalized for severe sepsis than the overall population with 4.9% of all patients with cancer experiencing sepsis.

Upon completion of this program, you will be able to identify patients at risk for infection and sepsis as well as provide useful interventions in the prevention of infection. Early intervention and swift management are the keys to providing the best care for the patient with cancer who is so much more susceptible to the overwhelming risks of infection. Whether you work in an oncology department or care for cancer patients, this webinar is for you: sign up today!

In the United States, at least 1 million people develop a pressure ulcer each year. The annual cost for the treatment of pressure ulcers is estimated to be $11 billion, which represents an eight-fold increase since the 1990s. Beyond the economic cost, pressure ulcers cause pain, poor overall prognosis and premature death in many patients.

There is much litigation originating out of disagreements as to whether pressure ulcers can be prevented. Inadequate nutrition was identified as the primary factor in one of the highest malpractice compensation awarded for pressure ulcers.

Legally, ethically, and clinically, pressure ulcer prevention should be of primary concern for the entire health care team.

Evidenced-based nutrition care is at the cornerstone of both prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers.

Celiac Disease (CD) is a chronic, inherited, digestive disease that can lead to malnutrition if untreated. CD is the result of an immune system response to the ingestion of gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley) that damages the small intestine. When the small intestine is damaged, nutrients pass through the small intestine rather than being absorbed and, if left untreated, the condition can lead to osteoporosis, anemia, miscarriage or cancer.

Celiac Disease is a genetic disorder affecting 1:133 persons in the USA, potentially two million people. For every person diagnosed with CD, approximately 80 people are undiagnosed.

During this 60-minute webinar, you will learn how to integrate the knowledge of a celiac diet into counseling strategies for patients with Celiac Disease, Type 1 Diabetes and wheat allergies, and also those who are non-celiac but still have suffer with gluten sensitivity. Gluten-free products have unique properties that impact on carbohydrate-to- insulin ratios.

A strict adherence to a gluten-free diet for life is the only treatment currently available for Celiac Disease. This involves the elimination of wheat, rye, barley, and foods made with these grains from one’s diet. Register for this webinar today to get in depth knowledge on the effects of gluten!

There are 750,000 cases of sepsis each year in the United States, resulting in 210,000 fatalities. The rate of mortality without shock present is 30% - 50% and, if shock appears, mortality increases to 50% - 60%. A partnership of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, and the International Sepsis Forum has teamed up with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement to implement the worldwide Surviving Sepsis Campaign. The goal of the campaign is a 25% reduction in deaths from sepsis by 2009.

Knowledge of the pathology and effects of severe sepsis/septic shock is important to understanding the rationale behind the Campaign’s treatment bundles. This program delves deeply into the pathophysiology and treatment of severe sepsis/septic shock. Early detection is the strongest indicator for a good patient outcome, and this webinar will discuss the clinical signs associated wtih the onset of SIRS, ARDS, and sepsis. Electrolytes are the basic 'building block' chemicals of the body. Alterations in the electrolytes can result in, as well as be the result of, numerous disease processes.

Sodium (Na+) reflects changes in water and salt balance. Potassium (K+) is the major intracellular cation and plays a major role in nerve conduction, muscle function, acid-base balance, osmotic pressure, and the rate and force of heart contraction. Chloride (Cl-) is responsible for maintaining cellular integrity by influencing osmotic pressure. Bicarbonate (HCO3-), sometimes called CO2 content, is regulated by the kidneys and is an important measurement when evaluating acid/base status. With these four electrolytes, the anion gap can be calculated and provide further information regarding the acid/base balance.

Calcium (Ca2+) functions in the body include: bone and teeth formation, blood clotting, muscle contraction and nerve impulse contraction (especially in the heart). Magnesium (Mg2+) is a cofactor in carbohydrate metabolism, protein synthesis, nucleic acid synthesis, and muscular contraction. During this 60-minute webinar, we will cover all of these important points in great detail, so that when you walk away, you will be able to assess your patient's chemistry values and provide optimal treatment.

Electronic Fetal Monitoring has become the standard in the Intrapartum Period.  Through the years, we have had a variety of experts telling us how to interpret the findings.  Unfortunately, they all conflicted in the “how and what” to interpret, making documentation and communication with our team members difficult and impacting outcomes negatively. In the last 10 years, with our national focus on patient safety, many of the authorities (both nursing providers and physician providers) have developed a set of definitions to help us improve our communication and outcomes.  More recently, newer guidelines were published which further standardize our interpretation.  This new language has become the standard of care.

During this 60-minute webinar, you will learn this new terminology and explore how to apply it to your practice.  Physicians, midwives and bedside nurses need to know how to use this new language correctly in order to maximize the efficiency of their communications.  The faster you can get your point across, the faster your team can make decisions and the quicker you can implement your plan of care.  This webinar will improve your ability to make the correct decisions and improve your outcomes.

Healthcare providers are often called upon to advise primary care providers which dressing to use for wound care. Most of them, including nurses and physicians, received very little information in school about how to make the optimal dressing choice. There are literally hundreds of dressings from which to from and most come with very little information about correct usage.

During this 60-minute webinar, we’ll explore a simple but effective system that helps providers make optimal choices of dressing types based on the characteristics of the wound. Using assessment information such as amount of exudate, depth and tissue type of the wound bed and condition of the skin around the wound, we will build a formulary of dressings and discuss the indications, contraindications and optimal use of dressings in each category.

Joan will share various clinical tips and tricks with you, derived from both evidence-based research and her extensive clinical experience. You will have the opportunity to test your new skills by selecting the optimal dressing for various sample wound cases.

Society can no longer consider healthcare institutions as sacred ground, immune from acts of violence. The alarming number of violent acts within medical facilities compels us to increase worker and employer awareness of risk factors for violence in all healthcare settings and to provide strategies for reducing exposure.

Healthcare providers do not recognize the full continuum and broad definition of workplace violence. Understanding the types and frequency of violent behaviors experienced in the healthcare setting will provide the foundation for early recognition and prevention of violence.

Participants also learn about the tools available from the IHI for identifying, managing, and collecting data on the septic patient.

Creating an environment that does not accept or tolerate acts of violence will increase staff satisfaction, reduce medical errors and improve clinical outcomes.

Nurses are not allowed to diagnose, but are expected to know the most likely etiology of skin breakdown and then choose an appropriate care plan. The buttock poses a particular challenge due to the difficulty of differentiating between skin injuries due to pressure or moisture.

During this 90-minute webinar you will be introduced to a system that can greatly simplify the process of differentiating pressure ulcers and moisture associated skin damage (MASD) such as incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD). By clarifying the definition of pressure ulcers and using a new IAD assessment tool, buttock skin injuries can be more accurately identified.

The public now believes that pressure ulcers are entirely preventable and pressure ulcer lawsuits are on the rise. It is more important than ever that we name a buttock wound correctly. Join us as we explore a method to do just that.

Creating an environment that does not accept or tolerate acts of violence will increase staff satisfaction, reduce medical errors and improve clinical outcomes.

"Look at me when I am talking with you." In some cultures, this behavior is considered disrespectful, especially when talking to one in authority or an elder. We learn the nuances of acceptable and respectful conversation from our families. Do they match those of our patients or our colleagues? If not, what do we need to do?

In this 60-minute teleseminar, we will examine the communication styles of various ethnic groups, including the use of silence, eye contact and touch. These are essential tools that an interpreter employs while "translating the language."

Communication is not complete until the "time orientation" component is considered. We will review past, present and future time orientation and discuss their implications when developing a plan of care.
