The 12-Lead ECG is an inexpensive, noninvasive assessment tool that provides valuable information about the patient. Accurate analysis of the ECG by a knowledgeable clinician can impact quality outcomes. The key to 12-lead ECG interpretation resides in understanding normal patterns. Fundamental skills are foundational to the confidence of the nurse in applying ECG information to clinical situations. These skills include: 1) understanding normal depolarization of the heart, 2) identifying the positive electrode for each lead, 3) recognizing normal ST segment and T waves on the ECG, 4) correctly identifying QRS patterns and 5) correlating each lead of the ECG with a wall of the myocardium. This 60-minute webinar will also apply knowledge of the 12 lead ECG to bedside cardiac monitoring. This class is designed for nurses not yet proficient with fundamental ECG skills and will serve as the basis for developing future ECG skills. Participants will complete this webinar with knowledge that can be applied to bedside clinical practice immediately
Seminar Information
Seminar Date:
September 01, 2009
Seminar Objectives
  • Identify the wall of the heart viewed by each lead on the 12-lead ECG.
  • Recognize the 'morphology' of the QRS complex for a right and left bundle branch block in lead V1
  • Determine the quadrant of axis on the 12-lead ECG by using the 'handy' method.
12-Lead ECG Fundamentals
  • Location of each lead on the 12-lead ECG
  • Location of positive and negative electrodes for each lead of the 12-lead ECG
  • Significance of positive electrode in relation to deflections of the complex on the 12-lead ECG
  • Wave identification within the QRS complex
  • Normal P, QRS, T wave patterns in all leads of the 12-lead ECG
  • BBB Morphology in lead V1
  • Handy method for axis
